Our class will be using the Grade 4 TERC Investigations Curriculum.
I have selected the TERC mathematics curriculum because it is an investigation-based program, which means that it teaches new concepts through problem-solving. With teacher guidance, TERC challenges students to evolve their own strategies and ways of thinking about mathematics, before introducing traditional algorithms.
The curriculum incorporates class discussion and reflection, independent work, educational games, technology, homework, and manipulatives such as cubes, pattern blocks, and even strategic use of calculators. This program also includes specific differentiation strategies for diverse learners, which means that lessons can be modified to suit the needs of students with different learning styles, or who may need extra support.
Through the evaluation of advantages and disadvantages of several popular curriculums (including Everyday Math, Houghton-Mifflin, and Singapore), I have concluded that TERC Investigations will be the best fit for our class. I will also be supplementing this program with additional literature and technology activities, examples of which can be found in the above links. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
